The Houston Barbecue Festival is pleased to announce that we are partnering with the Houston Housing Authority and local charity Eat for a Cause to raise funds for Houston’s homeless population, with a focus on homeless veterans.

The Houston Housing Authority (HHA) has housed to date 795 homeless Houstonians. The agency currently administers the nation’s third largest voucher program exclusively serving homeless veterans. Working with community partners the agency has provided 284 homeless veterans with housing and supportive services through its Housing Houston’s Heroes initiative.

Eat for a Cause was established to raise funds and awareness for worthy causes through unique food-related events.

Primary fundraising will be through a raffle of barbecue smoker products provided by Houston pitmaker Texas Original Pits (texasoriginalpits.com).

“Even though this is a first-year festival, with all the logistics and planning complications that entails, we always wanted a significant charitable component for the Houston Barbecue Festival,” said Chris Reid, one of the festival organizers. “We found the perfect partners in Eat for a Cause, the Houston Housing Authority, and Texas Original Pits.”

Raffle tickets ($5 each or 5 for $20) will be available for purchase at the inaugural Houston Barbecue Festival at the Bayou City Event Center on 24 March 2013. Raffle tickets will be sold separately from festival admission tickets. More information about the festival is available at http://houbbq.com.
