Houston barbecue (HOUBBQ) has a good thing going. It’s the upcoming barbecue market in Texas (and therefore the world), and this year’s HOUBBQ Festival will be the best ever. Media attention is slowly pivoting from Austin to Houston where the market for great barbecue is far from saturated. HOUBBQ joints are busting at the seams with lines of barbecue-mad Houstonians streaming out the doors. It’s a good time to be a barbecue lover in Houston.
We at the Houston Barbecue Festival have decided it’s time to take the message of HOUBBQ on the road. Specifically to the Big Apple – New York City. Co-founders J.C. Reid and Michael Fulmer along with social media director J.R. Cohen will be attending Brisket King NYC – one of the premier barbecue events in the Big Apple. Having that many of New York’s pitmasters in one place will give us the opportunity to evaluate where the restless barbecue scene in New York – and especially Brooklyn – is heading. We look forward to seeing old friends like Daniel Delaney of Delaney BBQ and Billy Durney of Hometown Bar-B-Que in Red Hook, Brooklyn. We had the pleasure of hosting Billy at the 2015 Houston BBQ Festival where he worked with Wayne Mueller in the Louie Mueller Barbecue booth.
Texas barbecue – including Houston barbecue – is no longer just a regional phenomenon. It is a global phenomenon. New York City – like it or not – has some Texas barbecue chops. Co-founder J.C. Reid was one of the first to write about the nascent NYC barbecue scene back in 2012 for the New York Times. Hill Country is still going strong along with Hometown and Delaney, and the ever-expanding Mighty Quinn’s empire is booming. Blue Smoke, the Danny Meyer pan-regional barbecue restaurant helmed by Louisiana native Jean-Paul Bourgeois, is as busy as ever. A kosher Texas-style barbecue movement is also in its earliest stages.
We’ll be meeting with all these good folks and checking up on their progress in the Texas barbecue game. At the same time we’ll be preaching the gospel of HOUBBQ far-and-wide.
Follow along with all the shenanigans the week of March 14th on our various social media accounts and you’ll know along with us how the barbecue scene in NYC and Brooklyn is shaping up. Tuesday the 15th will be our Brooklyn BBQ Run- taking one of our longtime Texas BBQ touring traditions and applying it to – of all places – Brooklyn NY.
