Media Coverage

Their clothes smelled like smoke and maybe sported some stains and greasy splotches. Their fingers glistened from many stabs into meat plumped with rendered fat. And their stomachs may have cried uncle. But those who attended the fifth annual Houston Barbecue Festival enjoyed the city's premier showcase for the glories of H-town barbecue. Link

There was a lot of good food this year. In fact I think it was the best year yet. The improvement in the Houston BBQ scene over the five years this festival has been going is nothing short of amazing. I think this fest should get some of the credit for that. Link

Where barbecue is concerned it's never a bad thing to plan early. Today the organizers of the Houston Barbecue Festival have announced the date for the 2017 smoked meat extravaganza: Sunday, April 9 at NRG Park. The festival also is offering a holiday gift with discounted admission for advance tickets to Houston's biggest barbecue event. Link

It was the perfect Sunday for some finger lickin'. The saucy day was complete with 25 different Texas barbecue joints. Twenty-three of them were local H-town favorites including CorkScrew BBQ, Pizzitola's Bar-B-Cue, and many more! And of course, sampling was unlimited because everything is bigger in Texas. Link

Congrats to the organizers of the Houston BBQ Festival on another sold-out show. Louie Mueller was my own personal money shot. That’s some Texas beef rib right there, folks, let me tell you. BBQ on a croissant, it’s what’s for breakfast in Houston. Great show! Link

When the smoke clears at NRG Park on Sunday more than two thousand barbecue fans will head home with shiny faces, greasy fingers, and maybe a slight case of meat sweats. And they will have said goodbye to another year where Houston can rightfully claim itself as one of barbecue nation's most influential capitals. The Houston Barbecue Festival had something to do with that. Link

The Houston Barbecue Festival, which will mark its fifth anniversary on April 9 at NRG Park, was conceived in 2013 as a way to promote the growing reputation of the Houston barbecue scene. Co-founders J.C. "Chris" Reid and Michael Fulmer began the festival to showcase the city's unique barbecue traditions that are larded with Mexican-American, African-American, Creole and Cajun foodways. Link

I felt like some of the places were trying to one up each other with their BBQ offerings. It is a win-win for all of us when this happens. The event is a great way to showcase the best of the Houston barbecue scene. Hopefully I will be back every year. It is one of those events that I do not want to miss. Link

I had a great time and the crowd appeared to as well, trays were loaded deep with pounds of samples. Lines grew during the general admission time and the entire event was over in a flash, leaving daydreams of exotic meats and smoky memories until next year. Link
