Ronald James “Jim” Buchanan, 58, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, surrounded by family.
Jim was born on March 6, 1968, in Jackson, Mississippi, and raised in Katy, TX, by his parents, Karen and Thomas (“Buck”) Buchanan. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served honorably in both the U.S. Army Rangers and the Texas Army National Guard, rising to the rank of Sergeant and serving as an Infantryman and Military Police Soldier. The resilience and community he developed during his military service remained a defining part of who he was throughout his life.
Following his time in the Army, Jim built a career in litigation support and screen printing before discovering the work that truly captured his heart: Texas barbecue. Cooking was never just a hobby, it was how Jim connected with people. He became known for his playful, “goofyque” style, and his relentless creativity. He delighted in experimenting with flavors, creating combinations that surprised and brought people together around the table.
Jim’s greatest gift wasn’t simply making exceptional barbecue, it was making people feel welcome. He had a larger-than-life personality, an infectious sense of humor, and a generous spirit that drew people in. Whether tending a smoker, sharing a meal, or swapping stories, Jim believed food was one of the purest expressions of love. His warmth, laughter, and charming irreverence left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Jim is survived by his mother, Karen Buchanan; his brother, Thomas Buchanan; and his biological father, Ronald Sweat, with whom he developed a relationship later in life. He is also survived by his former wife, Colleen, whose family remained his family long after their marriage ended. Their enduring bond was a testament to the love and loyalty that outlasted titles and circumstances. Jim also leaves behind his cousin, Rich Kelley, who was a brother in every way that mattered, along with countless friends who became family through years of shared meals, laughter, and life’s adventures.
Two celebrations of Jim’s life will be held. One in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and another in Houston, Texas. Family and friends will gather to share stories, remember his remarkable life, and honor the legacy of generosity, laughter, and love he leaves behind.
The event in Houston will be held on Monday, August 31st, 2026 from 4-6pm at J-Bar-M Barbecue, 2201 Leeland St.
